Distribution Transformer VS Power Transformer

Transformers are essential components of any electrical system as they facilitate the transformation of power from one voltage level to another. There are two main types of transformers used in electrical systems, Distribution Transformer and Power Transformer. Both have specific functions and differ in their design and application.

A distribution transformer is used to step down the voltage from the transmission or sub-transmission voltages to the level used by customers. They typically have a lower power rating and operate at much lower voltages, ranging from 2.4 kV to 34.5 kV. They are usually installed on poles or at ground level and serve specific loads such as residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Distribution transformers play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient delivery of electricity, especially in areas that are far from the main power grid.

Power transformers, on the other hand, are used to step up or step down the voltage of bulk power at high voltage levels. They typically have a higher power rating compared to distribution transformers and operate at higher voltages, ranging from 110 kV to 765 kV. Power transformers are used to interconnect separate power systems or connect generators to the transmission grid. They may also be located at utility power stations along with other high voltage equipment.

The design and construction of distribution and power transformers differ significantly. Distribution transformers are smaller in size and are generally designed with a simple core and wound primary and secondary coils. Power transformers, on the other hand, are much larger and more complex, and may have multiple windings and a more elaborate core design to withstand high voltage and currents. Power transformers are usually oil-filled with an integral cooling system, allowing for efficient heat dissipation during operation.
