Difference Between Dry Type Step Up and Step Down Transformers

Two types of transformers are often used in power systems, dry type step up transformer and dry type step down transformer, so what is the difference between the two? Next, the editor will analyze the difference between the two from five aspects: working mode, voltage-current, conductor size, rated power and application.

1. How it works

A dry type step down transformer steps down the input voltage applied to the primary winding.

A dry type step up transformer increases the input voltage applied in the primary winding.

2. Voltage-current

The input voltage of the secondary side of the dry type step down transformer is high, the output voltage is low, and the current is large.

The secondary side of the dry type step up transformer has low input voltage, high output voltage and low current.

3. Conductor size

The secondary winding of the dry type step down transformer consists of thick insulated copper wire.

The primary winding of the dry type step up transformer consists of thick insulated copper wire.

4. Rated power

A step-down transformer is relatively lower than a step-up transformer. range below 110 volts.

A step-up transformer is taller than a step-down transformer. Rated over 11,000 volts.

5. Application

Step-down transformers are used in many household appliances, voltage converters.

Step-up transformers are used in power distribution systems, X-ray machines, etc.

The fundamental difference between dry type step up transformer and dry type step down transformer is how they work. A step-up transformer increases the supply voltage, while a step-down transformer reduces the supply voltage.
